New York rang in the summer, and longest day of the year (a whopping fifteen hours of daylight) with two celebrations in beauty and health. And it got help from some very famous names.
Most New Yorkers have never had their shoes off in Times Square. Most New Yorkers haven’t gotten their butts kicked in Times Square either—at least not by a model and yogi. But on June 20, Athleta and the Times Square Alliance made both those things come true for many with it’s 10th Annual Solstice in Times Square: Athleta Mind Over Madness celebration.

With four sessions, beginning at 7:30 a.m. for those early morning yoga buffs (and novices) and the last on the helm of the 7 p.m. sunset, Solstice in Times Square provided a free workout for anyone bold enough to take on the challenge of finding zen in the middle of one of the most frenetic places in the world.
Athleta provided free yoga mats to the first 1,500 people to check-in for each session, and had spotters on site to help participants with realignment. Athleta stores also held free yoga classes led by local instructors for those who couldn’t make it to the Midtown event.
Drisana Carey, veteran yoga instructor and Athleta model, shared that “with yoga you allow that inner beauty to exude out and around you and that’s authentic, gorgeous even.”
"Yoga for me is really the true beauty and brilliance that exudes from deep inside you that you get to share with everyone around you,” she said.
So how does a novice incorporate yoga into her beauty routine?
“Start with a breath. Connecting simply with a breath and moving is yoga. All you need is breath and a safe space,” Carey continued.
How’s that for a little morning downward dog?
In another New York hot spot (and it was scorching on Wednesday) a beauty heavyweight was celebrating the summer solstice with some PDA. Nivea hosted a celebration for National PDA Day as part of a series of events around New York, Los Angeles, and nine other cities across the country, encouraging couples to get out there and show their affection in the spirit of summer love. With hosts Wendy Williams, Bill and Giuliana Rancic, and a special performance by R&B artist NE-YO, the festivities jumped off in Herald Square at 9 a.m.
Guests enjoyed free full-sized Nivea products and even American Express gift cards courtesy of a giant spin wheel. Guests also had a chance to show their own PDA at the kissing booth, the photo booth, and over a cup of coffee and a muffin on what Nivea themed “the morning date.”
“Nivea understands the power of touch, which is why every product we develop keeps touch in mind,” said Magnus Jonsson, VP of Marketing at Nivea.
As guests walked away all smiles with their new Nivea lotions, body washes, and lip balms—some with yoga mats in hand—the summer gave promise to be one of beautiful skin and healthy bodies.
